:: eyes ::

I have always loved eyes. It’s incredibly enlightening to look into someone’s eyes. People can hide so little when it comes to their eyes. As a photographer I have begun to appreciate eyes all the more. In peoples eyes you find who they really are. Some are innocent and trusting. Some are wary and frightened. Some are joyful and yet marked by suffering. Some are all about attitude. Their clothes may say one thing and their eyes may something completely different. 

Eye’s have been called ‘the window to the soul’. Perhaps that’s why they fascinate me so much. People can be captivating without being what is culturally accepted as beauty all because of their eyes. People can be applauded by society for their beauty and be utterly repulsive because of the death and rebellion in their eyes. I find that incredibly interesting. Especially with the push we have in our culture to be ‘beautiful’. I think it’s kind of funny and rather sad all at the same time. What’s the use of being physically beautiful if your eyes are screaming how ugly you really are? 

I think it’s sad that we Christians have bought into our cultures focus on outward beauty.  Clothes, Makeup, etc. The treasure of a beautiful soul seems to have been horribly neglected. It hurts me so much to meet a ‘Christian’ (they would call themselves Christians doesn’t necessarily mean that they are Christians) with dead/ugly eyes. They can be attractively dressed, even attractive physically, but their eyes are so very dead. I think we are missing something here. It’s time to change it. Anyone can look attractive on the outside, but it takes someone special to be attractive from the inside out. We are Christians, shouldn’t we be different? Shouldn’t our eyes make the world want what we have? Shouldn’t our inward beauty overtake our physical beauty?
